Solihull Special Olympics

Shirley Lions were out in force to assist at the recent Special Olympics held at the Tudor Grange Leisure Centre in Solihull.

Organised by ENABLE-SOLIHULL, where Lion Martin Wright of Shirley Lions is the General Manager, the event was timed to coincide with the opening of the Paralympics Games.

ENABLE-SOLIHULL is an organisation which works with individuals who have a range of disabilities, as well as the organisations that support disabled people in Solihull (such as care and support organisations and statutory bodies).

Events held during the day included boccia, curling, bowls, kickboxing, martial arts, table tennis and wheelchair basketball. Unfortunately the outdoor events of archery and golf had to be cancelled as typical of a summer’s day it poured with rain all day long!

The highlights of the day for the participants were a visit by the Mayor of Solihull and the wheelchair basketball which was both fast and furious. The spectators seemed more worried about the regular crashes and tumbles than the participants who just got on with it.

All in all a very satisfying day both for the volunteers and participants and is hoped to run a similar event next year.
