Part of Wolverhampton Lions Club Charter Night was the presentation of an award that the club has been doing for many years, in fact, since just after the club was formed in 1973. The award is their Citizen of the Year Award and this year it was awarded to a Mr Percy Simmonds for his long standing charity work and for his work as Wolverhampton’s Town Crier.

Percy is the oldest Town Crier in Britain, regularly turning out to give help and assistance to Lions Clubs around the area as he was a member of Lions Clubs International some years ago. He still proudly displays the MD105 badge on his official Town Crier uniform. Over the years Percy has helped hundreds of charities to raise thousands of pounds and at the age of 90 still continues to turn out to help Lions and local charities.

Following the presentation of the award by Lion President Stephen Pitt, Stephen himself was also presented with a club gift for his work as Club President during his year of 2011/2012; DG Lion Paul Anstice presenting him with this gift.

On the night, the Mayor of Wolverhampton, Councillor Christine Mills was also pleased to present Percy with his award and a cheque for his chosen charity
