Ordinary People doing Amazing Things

Tuned in to the Needs of Others

Aldridge Lion Mike Barker welcomes a colleague from down under

The Aldridge & District Lions Club has an annual raffle to accompany their Fayre which is the main fund raiser for the President's project of the year. For raffle prizes we rely heavily on local traders who generally support us very well. This year we had a Roberts digital radio donated by Middleton TV of Aldridge who have supported us for many years - this was the first prize in the raffle.

On the day, the lady who won the prize was delighted as she "never wins any raffles" but was so keen on the work of the Lions that she immediately donated it back again in the hope we could use it beneficially.

A week or so ago, the Italian Market came to Aldridge and the Lions had a stand there. In addition to general PR and promotional activities we decided to do a one day raffle to win the radio. What a successful day - in addition to getting the Lions in front of so many people we raised over £120 for our charity account. One of the people we met was an Australian Lion who had come all this way just to meet the Aldridge & District Lions! (well, perhaps that may not be true).

But the real icing on the cake was when we went to deliver the prize to the winner. She was a lady who had a son with Downs Syndrome. The whole family were on the front step to receive their prize which was duly handed over to a very happy lad. No picture I'm afraid but the memory of that family receiving their radio will stay for some time.
