'Support' for St. John Ambulance

Redditch Lions Club have presented to the Studley branch of St. John Ambulance, a vacuum splint.

A Vacuum Splint is a device like a small vacuum mattress that is used in emergency medicine as a temporary splint. Air is extracted from the splint itself to enable the thousands of polystyrene balls inside the splint to mold around the injured body part without causing further damage. Vacuum splints are primarily used by paramedics to splint trauma-related injuries; joint dislocation and extremity fractures. Advantages of the vacuum splint include the ability to provide support whilst relieving pressure at the injury site and the ability to conform to any shape. The limb may also be x-rayed with the splint in situ.

The presentational was made in thanks to the medics who's prompt action at a Lions Club event, saved a members foot from a possible amputation, when he tumbled down an embankment, twisting and wrenching his ankle.

The vital piece of equipment was an item on the top of the St. John branch's wish list of necessary equipment to have at hand when attending an incident.
