Ordinary People doing Amazing Things

The Bewdley Duck Race .... or The Morning After The Night Before!!

Early morning on January 1st saw members of Kidderminster & District Lions Club hard at work by the Severn in Bewdley setting up for the annual DUCK RACE.

Lions' Banners were erected. Sponsors' banners were displayed. Gazebos were set up for the ticket office. The PA systems were set up and starting cannon prominently displayed. And as soon as we opened at 10.00 there was a queue to register and rent ducks. Over the next 2 hours of manic activity 884 ducks were registered in an atmosphere full of banter and good humour.

The Mayor of Bewdley judged the best dressed duck competition, and started the Race at noon. An estimated 2000 spectators watched from the banks. The Wyre Forest Canoe Club pulled out the winning ducks - and then the other 800+!! SARA (Severn Area Rescue Association) provided safety services. Bewdley Rotary managed the road closures and traffic. And a good time was had by all.

It all resulted in a record take for our charities, with over £2.5k in the 2 hours and over £3k including business sponsorships.

Press coverage before and after the event included articles in the the Express and Star, Kidderminster Shuttle, Kidderminster Chronicle, Worcester News, and there are a number of other videos on You Tube

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYBODY!
