Ordinary People doing Amazing Things

Shirley Lions gamble for a good cause

Friday 9th March saw approaching 100 Lions and friends of Lions attend Shirley Lions annual Charity Casino Night at the Shirley Social Club. As the value of the gambling chips was such that you buy £1000 of chips for £1 no-one minded how much they were winning or losing but simply everyone had a good fun evening. Organised by Lions Andy Luckett and Martin Conlon there were two main prizes up for grabs at the end of the evening – one for the lady with the most chips and one for the gentleman with the most chips. It soon became apparent that luck or was it skill had been with the ladies as the winning lady had £500,000 worth of chips. As for men, who had been seen all evening going back to the Bank to buy more and more chips the winning gentleman had a measly £6,000 worth of chips.

Whilst a fun evening, the aim was also to raise funds for charity and in particular to raise funds for the Zone project this year – a specialist bed in the Stroke Unit at Solihull Hospital costing £2,000. With 5 clubs in the Zone, each Club is contributing £400. With event raising in excess of £1,000 Shirley’s contribution was not just met but easily exceeded.
