Ordinary People doing Amazing Things

Lions Race for Maria

In September Marston Green & District Lions Club held a fun race night with a difference. Instead of watching the races on film, each race was live, with every “horse” (a stool with a wooden horses head attached ) being auctioned and the jockeys chosen by the “horses” owners.

Two large wheels were spun to determine which “horse” moved and by how many spaces, and a 50p tote was in operation throughout. The races caused great excitement and the winning owners received a cash prize and a bottle of bubbly.

Although the turn out was not quite as good as expected, the evening raised £1000 in aid of the Maria Watt Foundation for Teenage Cancer and Leukaemia. This was even more pleasing when Diane Watt (founder of the charity) announced that this meant that the charity had reached it’s target of raising £100,000 to be used to furnish and equip Maria’s room at the new Teenage Cancer Trust Unit at Birmingham Children‘s Hospital.

Marston Green & District Lions Club would like to thank everyone who sponsored races, donated prizes or attended on the night, and special thanks must go to Balsall Common Lions Club, who kindly lent us their race night equipment and sent their President along as well!
