Ordinary People doing Amazing Things

Warwick Town Bonfire

Warwick Town Bonfire was held at Warwick Racecourse on Saturday 7th November organised by Warwick Rotary Club, Warwick Lions Club and Warwick Round Table and sponsored by Warringtons of Warwick Bosch Service and Café Nero Warwick.

A few spots of early evening rain did nothing to deter the large crowds, who started coming in from 5.15 PM. For their entertainment, there was a bouncy castle and several fast food stalls. At 6.30 PM, the Mayor Councillor Peggy Bennett, accompanied by Graham Sutherland, the Town Crier, and a group of organisers went to light the bonfire. The Town Crier motivated the crowd and in unison they counted down from 10, then the Mayor and the Official Firelighter together lit the bonfire.

It consisted mainly of pallets, which quickly blazed up into a bright, hot fire.

This year the crowd was arranged in an L shape, giving a better view to more people of the bonfire and the fireworks which followed about 20 minutes later. The splendid display was much appreciated.

Organisers say it is too early to say if it was a record crowd, but they expect the final takings to be over £10,000. Profits will be divided equally between the charity accounts of the 3 organising clubs. They are grateful to all the shops which sold bonfire tickets in advance of the event.
