Aldridge and District Lions Club, through its Youth Officers Lions Mike Barker & Bob Metcalfe, invited the 6 secondary schools in their area to enter a Key Stage 4 & a Key Stage 5 pupil for their Community Service Trophy which was held on 17th November. Lion Bob, a member of the Club for less than 12 months, said, “This has provided an excellent opportunity to build links with all the secondary schools in our area and we look forward to all six schools taking part in the Year 9 Quiz which will be our next Youth event in March”.

The pupils who attended were asked to give a 3 minute presentation in front of Teachers, Parents and Lions and were then individually asked the same questions by the Judges, Lions Chris Barker, Bob and Mike, who then had the unenviable task of selecting the recipient of the Trophy for 2009 based on their community involvement, presentation and response to the questions. Lion Bob said, “I am amazed at how much these young people are involved in trying to make things better for fellow human beings and through their community involvement they were all winners”. The recipient of the Trophy was Eleanor Grice who had it formally presented at an assembly in Aldridge School on Friday 27th November.

Eleanor’s community involvement includes work with 2 Youth Clubs, one being “Hothouse” in a deprived area of Aldridge which the Lions Club helped out financially when it first started about 15 years ago. She also runs a crèche at church and is involved with various charities abroad. Her latest involvement was to volunteer to help the Club on its Tin Shake at the local Morrisons and in respect of this the Club will be donating £50 to Eleanor’s chosen Charity in her name. All the participants received a certificate and gift voucher. Lion Mike says, “This has given us an opportunity to meet with potential candidates to represent the Club in “Young Ambassadors” 2010-11”.
