Ordinary People doing Amazing Things

Kettering induct 8 new members

At their June business meeting, Kettering & District Lions club inducted 8 new members, and for the first time in the club’s 37 year history, 5 women joined. The club organised a recruitment drive in February, and 4000 leaflets were delivered in the snow, backed by several mentions in the local press advertising the date of the Drinks & Nibbles meeting. We also had a long interview on BBC local radio, talking about the Lions and advertising the meeting.

We were amazed, and nearly overwhelmed when 42 people came through the doors, and the “Lion’s Story” DVD proved invaluable in getting across the message of what Lions do to such a large audience. Inevitably there was a large number who did not continue with their involvement, but we were left with over a dozen keen and enthusiastic potential members, who came to the different fund raising, social and community services activities that the club had planned.

President John Geary welcomed them into the club, and said that we were still hoping to enrol another 3 or 4 more at a later date. He said that the club would continue with its varied and busy events program, and that the new members would bring in new ideas, and increase the help and support for the local community in and around Kettering.

At the end of May Kettering & District Lions Club organized their annual day in Wicksteed Park, inviting all the clubs in 105M to send deprived or special needs children/adults to enjoy a day in Kettering. The weather was fairly good and the rain held off, and nearly 150 people came and had a fantastic fun-filled day. Ten clubs from district came, and by taking advantage of the free parking and heavily discounted arm- bands for the rides, provided a community service for a very reasonable cost.

We would like to thank those clubs which supported us, and suggest others should think about including this event in April 2011, when they plan their calendar for next year, to provide a special day for people in their area.
