Lions support student travel plans

Edinburgh, Borneo & Nepal are the destinations of three Knowle students following their successful applications to the Knowle and Dorridge Lions for funding under this year’s Youth Travel Bursary scheme.

Following presentations and interviews, the Lions decided to award bursaries to all three applicants this year with grants totalling £2000 being provided to help the three students to fulfil their ambitious travel plans.

Julia Shelley will be joining a musical comedy group of Cambridge undergraduates and performing in London and at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe throughout the Summer. Julia said – ‘This is a once in a lifetime chance for me. I’m really looking forward to the experience it will bring’

Presently at Durham University Olivia James will be spending 2 months in Nepal developing a greater awareness of the music culture of diverse ethnic groups. Olivia said – ‘By visiting Nepal I’m hoping to experience the culture first hand and to bring back an awareness you cannot get at uni’

Heading off for a year in Borneo next month is Thomas Jewell is volunteering at an outward bound school in Sabah, Borneo with the Project Trust educational charity. Thomas said - ‘I’m really looking forward to spending a year with the outward bound school in Sabah. Only with the grant from the Lions will my year’s volunteering be possible’

‘We were fortunate to receive three high quality applications this year’, said Bob Thurtle, Chair of the Lions Community Services Committee. ‘We look forward to many more applications next year.
