Lions Walk Helps Run The Centre

The annual Coventry Walkathon has once again proved what a marvellous vehicle the event, organized by the Coventry Leofric Lions Club, is for raising money for charities and good causes.

Thanks to Ross Brady and her team the Coventry Resource Centre for the blind in Earlsdon Raised £1000 from the 2010 event.

This was a dedicated effort to keep the centre running

The Coventry Resource Centre, a new charity set up to support blind people in Coventry, is run entirely by volunteers since national charity Sense withdrew its funding earlier this year.

The centre offers a range of services for blind and partially sighted people in the city.

It was previously called Coventry Society for the Blind but has now changed its name and is run by a group of dedicated volunteers.

Chairman Rose Brady confirmed “Since Sense withdrew all funding in March this year a small group of trustees has been busy applying for grants and fundraising.

New computers and software for the ICT suite, which will enable partially sighted and blind users to participate in classes with a tutor and volunteers, has only been made possible because of hard work by the volunteers.

We are only a small local charity but we have managed to save the centre from closure.”

She added “fundraising has now started in earnest and members have rallied round to help raise the £25,000 a year needed to keep the centre running.”

As well as providing computer equipment adapted for people with sight problems the centre offers social groups, tandem bike riding and lunch clubs.

14 volunteers turned up on the day and they completed as many sponsored three quarters of a mile of the Memorial Park as they could. At 94 the oldest member of the group was Gwen Edge, who enjoyed the challenge.

Participants in the Leofric LionsWalkathon can raise money for any charity of their choice and the 2011 event will be held on 15 May 2011.
