District Golf Competition |
|||
2009 Trophy being presented at District 105M Convention |
|||
Past 105M District Governors usually meet several times in the year, and once a year they arrange a golf match. In the last few years “The District Golf Competition“, has been arranged at the same location. Arrangements were made for the both this year at Bromgsrove Golf Centre, thanks being due to organiser PDG Brian Burgess. Now for those non-golfers amongst you, the general idea is to wack a little ball around a big field for several hours, stopping en route on some 18 flatter bits each with a hole, for long enough to tap your ball into said hole. The hard part for most of us is that we have to count the number of hits it takes to complete this task. This number of hits is converted by a complicated set of rules into “Stableford Points” and the winner is the one with the most of these points. The golfing god has decreed that a golfer “should” score 36 points on most courses, and to help this along has allowed golfers who cannot make the grade (nearly all of us!) to have “handicaps” which perversely are there to make things easier. You will note that all the Lions golfers have handicaps, some have significant ones. So, before dismissing the Lions Golf competitions as an irrelevance please spare a charitable thought for this band of individual Lions, with their various handicaps, trudging around for hours. Then admire their determination for completing this onerous task despite awful weather conditions. The results for the district competition were Winner: Stuart Richmond (handicap 26 which is a seriously big one) from Bilston & Willenhall with a Stableford score of 41 points - very well done. Runner up Terry Ward, (Bromsgrove) last year’s winner, with 35 points. Other scores Tim Hewson Stoate 29
PDG Doug Cross Chairman of PDG Liaison Committee presented the District Golf cup together with prizes. Results for PDG Golf Brian Burgess retained the trophy with 39 points Joint runners up John Bush and John Freeth 33 points Other scores John Poole 26
(Note that the PDGs are not letting on what their handicaps are…!) Last minute addition PDG Ron Cross, having cleaned out four inches of leaves from his golf bag, did not trouble the scorers too much. In the match between ”Treasurers“, John Bush birdied the 11th. (That’s golf language for a very good thing to do – lots of points scored!) Not to be outdone Brian Burgess, in a “bush “ with his second shot, to the right of the 13th green, called “the ashes”, also birdied the 13th hole; however in hitting out of the conifer tree, blind, the ball apparently hit the putter which John Bush was holding, and was diverted into the hole. (That sounds a very lucky way to score lots of points. However Brian was so far ahead of the others that it has not affected the outcome!) Come on you golf rules addicts, what’s the ruling? Is this a penalty for John or Brian, or a rub of the green? ** ** Answer – the latter. (Rule 19-2 states that “If a player’s ball is accidentally deflected or stopped by an opponent, his caddie or his equipment, there is no penalty.” The golfer has the option to replay the shot or to play the ball as it lies.) More information of next years’ competition to be held in August 2011 will follow. |
