Most people celebrating their Diamond Wedding Anniversary might expect to receive champagne, flowers and cards but when George and Eunice Young reached their 60 year anniversary what should arrive at their house but two pallets of about 80 giant Easter Eggs!

The reason for this was that George Young is a member of Shakespeare Lions club and has for many years organised the Lions Easter Egg Raffle. This year Shakespeare Lions club has been joined by Alcester Lions club and Wellesbourne & District Lions club in placing Easter Eggs in many pubs, clubs and schools in the Stratford area.

Lion George expressed his thanks to all those taking part and advised that tens of thousands of pounds had been raised over the years through the Easter Egg Raffle. Shakespeare Lions would, as usual, be using monies raised to assist child and youth activities in the town. Historically the club has organised an annual children’s party at the Civic Hall as well as providing support to the Welcombe Hills special school, Tyler Street Youth Centre, the Getaway Club and the Buzz café in addition to the many individual grants made to ease cases of suffering or to support educational need.

Shakespeare Lions President – Lion John Barlow – paid tribute to the efforts of Lion George saying “the Lions’ Easter Egg Raffle was initiated by Lion George several years ago and he has been responsible for the continuing success of the event. Many young people in the Stratford-upon-Avon area have a lot to be grateful to Lion George for, because, without his unflagging drive and energy in raising thousands of pounds from the Easter Egg Raffle, Shakespeare Lions club would not be able to provide the financial assistance to the many youth activities in the area that it supports.”
