Malvern Hill Lions Triumph in Lions Youth Football competition 

Welland Juniors FC, sponsored by Malvern Hills Lions Club are this year’s District winners of the Lions Youth Football competition. In a one-sided final they defeated Knowle Juniors FC, sponsored by Shirley Lions Club 8 - 2 and now go forward to represent our District in the national stages of the competition.

Unfortunately the kick off for the match which was held at Welland’s ground was delayed for 15 minutes as the Knowle Juniors and their supporters from Shirley Lions were held up because of a pile up which closed the M5. As soon as the match started things became worse for Knowle as they conceded a penalty after just 5 minutes and after just 7 minutes were 2 – 0 down. Knowle did pull back a goal almost immediately but two more goals for Welland and a second for Knowle left the half time score at 4 - 2.

Facing a strong wind in the second half Knowle were unable to cope with a rampant Welland team who scored a further 4 second half goals without reply to deservedly win the District Final 8 – 2.

Although well beaten the Knowle youngsters never let their heads drop and kept on trying to play football until the bitter end. On the final whistle District Football Officer, Lion Carl Kings congratulated both teams, handed out Lions medals to all the players and presented the Cup to Welland’s captain.
