Ordinary People doing Amazing Things

Evesham Lions Football Festival

Funding to help the Soccer Sixes Football competition sponsored by Evesham Lions was obtained from Barclays Premier League “creating chances for players”. The inaugural event was held in 2007 and the second Middle Schools Soccer Sixes Football competition took place at Evesham High School recently.

Pupils from Evesham High School years 9 and 10 were responsible for the organisation and officiating of the event as part of their Junior Football Organisers award and they conducted themselves brilliantly.

All Evesham partnership Middle Schools were invited to enter a Year 7 team, with each team playing a group phase, with the qualifiers then competing in the semi-final and final.

The third and fourth place play-off saw Blackminster Middle School claim bronze with a 1-0 victory over Simon de Montfort.

The final was between Abbey Park Middle School from Pershore and Brendon Hill who were quick out of the blocks racing into a three-goal lead. Abbey weren’t disheartened and battled back during the second half to level at three all. This meant a period of extra-time when once again Brendon took the lead only for their opponents to equalise in the dying seconds.

The lottery of a penalty shoot-out followed with the Abbey Park goalkeeper proving to be the hero saving a decisive spot-kick.

Evesham Lions are looking forward to this becoming an annual event for both boys and girls teams.
