KEITH’S COAST to COAST WALK

KEITH’S COAST to COAST WALK

Keith Ogley, a member of the Kettering and District Lions Club, set out on May 29th to walk 192 miles, following the famous Wainwright’s Coast to Coast walk. It starts at St. Bees on the Cumbrian coast, goes through the Lake District, over the Westmoreland and Yorkshire Dales, into North York Moors finishing at Robin Hood Bay. Keith had previously completed the walk eight years ago to raise money by sponsorship, to donate to the Cransley Hospice where his wife was looked after by the caring and dedicated staff. He wanted to do it again, and asked the Lions if they would support him to raise a lot more money, in addition to his sponsorship. The Lions organised a raffle, with the first prize of a week’s holiday in an apartment in the Algarve, donated by a member Lion, with other prizes including free tickets for Silverstone, a luxury pampering day at a spa, and many more.

Keith completed the walk in13 days, and was helped by Thirsk & Northallerton and Windermere & Ambleside Lions clubs, who transported Keith to his overnight accommodation, and then took him back to the pathway the next morning. Keith said that it was a great help to see a friendly face waiting for him when his feet were aching, but he did enjoy the walk as the weather was fairly kind to him on most of the days.

The Lions organised selling the raffle tickets in Kettering town centre on several days, and went to table top sales and held a tombola stall at Burton Latimer duck race. Keith and several Lions were helped by the Sainsbury’s stores in Kettering, and Burton Latimer which allowed collections in their store foyers.

Sponsorship money is still coming in, and the total collected so far is over £5,000, which Keith wanted to share between the hospice, and the Lions charity account.

On June 22nd, which was Keith’s 70th birthday, his family organised a party and Keith presented cheques to Diana Patrick the fund raising organiser for Cransley, and Malcolm Harris, the President of the Lions Club.
