Young At Heart

Marston Green & District Lions recently held their annual “Young at Heart Night” at St. Anne’s Church Centre, Chelmsley Wood. Over 100 people from various local groups and housing schemes participated in an evening of fun and entertainment provided by the Lions.

The evening was ably compèred by 1st VDG Lion Simon Moss and started with a game of Heads & Tails. This was followed by an hour of entertainment from the talented Adrian Michaels, who joked and sang his way through many popular songs and succeeded in getting many of the audience up on the dance floor.

During an interval two games of Bingo were played, followed by another hour of laughter, singing and dancing with Adrian Michaels.

Our District Young Ambassador, Liam Barrett, and his parents were present and, although Liam was embarrassed to be in the limelight, he was persuaded to join in the dancing. Much to Liam’s further embarrassment, his father joined Adrian on stage where, together with Simon Moss, they gave a spirited rendition of a yodelling song.

A good time was had by all.

Biggest ever response to Drinks & Nibbles evening!

Marston Green & District Lions Club have just hosted their most well attended Drinks & Nibbles event to date. After delivering 3,000 yellow card invites, a total of 27 people responded, of which 17 turned up on the evening and a further 3 people have since contacted us for more information.

The event was held at St Anne’s Social Club in Chelmsley Wood, and after the guests had been greeted and offered a drink, they were welcomed by Geoff Matthews, the Membership Chairman. A short video followed the introduction, and then the guests were able to meet the Lions and find out more about our club and Lions in general. Our Club boards were also on display, and each guest was given a pack to take away with them, which included further information and contact details.

So far, we have had 6 positive follow ups from those who attended on the night, and 3 of them have now been to a club meeting. 2 of them also came along to Kenilworth Fete to see what we did, and stayed to help out on the various stalls that we were running. A further 2 came along to our “Young at Heart” evening (a free evening of entertainment for local senior citizens), rolled up their sleeves and got stuck in straight away.

We are keeping our fingers crossed that they have liked what they have seen, and that they will chose to join our club – but if not, then at the very least we will have made a few more people aware of Lions and what we are about!

Queens Diamond Jubilee

To celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, Marston Green & District Lions Club held a Jubilee party at the home of one of their Lions. It was supposed to be a garden party but, thanks to the unpredictable weather, it was more of a house party. Everybody dressed in red, white and blue, or Fifties clothing and we all took along a plate of suitable food – sandwiches with the crusts cut off, Victoria sponge, trifle and all manner of “posh nosh” – Fifties style.

A good crowd turned up, including two prospective members and, in spite of the intermittent showers, managed to have a good time, eat far too much and, of course, raise a glass of bubbly to Her Majesty.
