Sun Shines on Aldridge Event

Despite weeks of rain and ongoing weather problems in both North and South England, the sun shone on Aldridge Fayre on Saturday – well at least for part of the day.

The organisers, the Aldridge & District Lions Club, were pleased with the turn out on the day both from the stall holders and from the public attendance.

Lions President, John Butler, said, “This was our 18th Annual Fayre and we were most concerned that we would have to cancel it owing to the amount of rain we had which affects the ground conditions. We have had to postpone it once previously for this reason and we thought it may happen again.”

The organisers, the Aldridge & District Lions Club, were pleased with the turn out on the day both from the stall holders and from the public attendance.

With just a couple of relatively dry days the event was able to go ahead and well over 1,000 people attended. The Mayor of Walsall, Councillor Dennis Anson, accompanied by the Mayoress, Mrs Kathleen Anson, opened the Fayre and wished the Lions every success.

Visitors were entertained at the Fayre by a full day of entertainment including dance displays from Cooper & Jordan School, Khalgani Bellydance Troupe and the Jo Leigh Dance School, music from the Shire Oak Academy Jazz Orchestra, Walsall Junior Coronets and the Aldridge Ukulele band plus displays from the calm of Aldridge Tai Chi to the energetic Panthers Judo Club.

John Butler said, “This event raises some thousands of pounds for the individual charities who attend and we are most grateful to the sponsors, Bullock Construction and Trophy Distributors UK, the many businesses in the Aldridge area who donate prizes for our raffle and to the trade organisations who attend the Fayre, many of whom have been coming for several years such as John Humphries Funfair.”

In addition to the separate charities raising their own funds, the Lions presented cheques to Walsall Heart Care, Breathe Easy and the Mayor’s charity appeal.

The Aldridge & District Lions Club are now planning for next year’s event and are looking for more help to do so. If you are interested in working with the Lions then contact Lion Harry Fry on 01922 451638.
