Ordinary People doing Amazing Things

Bye Bye DG

We thought we had said Bye Bye to a DG meeting for 2011 Wrong. We tried hard changing the venue twice and the date three times to no avail. Like a bad penny he turned up.

Joking apart Martin Bye our DG did the Lions proud on the night presenting two cheques to charities, money raised from this year’s Coventry Walkathon, and making a further presentation to the lions members who had achieved 25 years’ service. There are eight who qualified for this award but three went AWL.

The DG presented the first cheque for £1763.00 to Acorn Established in 1988, Acorns Children's Hospice Trust is a registered charity offering a network of care for life limited and life threatened children and young people, and their families, across the heart of England. These children and young people are not expected to reach adulthood and require specialist care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Acorns are currently supporting nearly 600 children and 800 families, including those who are bereaved.

Acorns is the only organization that provides this level of care to these vulnerable youngsters whilst offering a range of support services to the whole family to help them cope at every stage of their child's life and beyond into bereavement.

They provide tailored nursing care for each child, short breaks, emergency and end of life care at each of our three hospices. It now costs over £7m to run all of the hospices and only a small percentage of that comes from government, so there is a continuing, desperate need for charitable donations.

Cruse Bereavement Care promotes the well-being of bereaved people and enables anyone bereaved by death to understand their grief and cope with their loss. As well providing free care to all bereaved people, the charity also offers information, support and training services to those who are looking after them.

The local branch of Cruse in Coventry has around 40 volunteers (Around 70 in Coventry and Warwickshire combined)

Ian Stevenson, chair of the local branch of Cruse said "We are delighted to have been able to participate in the Walkathon and our thanks go to the Lions for organising the event and for our team of volunteers. We rely entirely on donations to finance the local operation and every last penny helps. The money will principally go towards specialist training for our volunteers.
