On Saturday 9th October a total of 87 people helped Warwick Lions Club celebrate their 50th Charter Night with a reception, dinner and dance at the historic Lord Leycester Hospital.

Warwick Lion President, Alan Lettis, outlined the history of the Warwick Lions, the club was formed in October 1960 masterminded by Charter Member Frank Denby with the Charter document being issued on 21st February 1961; its first President was Charles Radford. In 1964 Charter Member Frank Denby became President; rising to become District Governor of what was then District 105B in 1970. Frank masterminded the information of another 14 clubs; Coventry (1963), Leamington (1967), Shakespeare (1967), Rugby Rokeby (1968), Northampton (1969), Solihull (1969), Banbury (1969), Kenilworth (1970), Coleshill (1970), Daventry (1970), Southam & District (1971), Wellebourne & District (1972), Wolverhampton (1973), and Balsall Common (1974). A further 39 clubs can claim their descent through these 14 ‘daughter’ clubs of Warwick. In the local District 105M (for Midlands) 80% of the clubs are descended from Warwick.

Over the years the club has organised many events and raised many 1000’s of pounds towards needy causes, both in the town and the wider world. In 1977, Warwick Lions twinned with Saumur Lions Club in the Loire Valley, France at the same time that the towns of Warwick and Saumur twinned, and since then the clubs have taken it in turns to visit each other. In 2005 a party of Warwick Lions visited Saumur to celebrate their 50th Charter Night.
