Club Twinning Meeting

Worcester Lions Club recently had the pleasure to welcome again our friends from Orleans Doyen Lions Club France.

The two clubs have been twinned since 1972 and regular exchanges have taken place both with the members but also exchanges with the children, (that appears not to happen nowadays – I wonder why?)

Worcester Lions and families met our French friends at the Countryside Centre on Friday afternoon and introduced them to their weekend hosts who then took them home for refreshment. We met at Lions Ray and Christine’s home yet again for an evening of fun, food and drink and although it was wet and windy the assortment of marquees and gazebos kept us dry. It was a lovely evening with updates from old friends but also on this occasion some ‘’new’’ members from Orleans - their club has 51 members!! In Orleans where the population is 150,000 there are 7 Lions clubs.

Saturday morning we met and boarded the coach to Warwick Castle. The excitement took hold with everyone enjoying the history and re-enactments in various parts of the castle, even if some were rather risqué - so what’s changed!

We left Warwick at 4pm and when we arrived back to Worcester the hosts took their French Lions home for a well deserved rest.

We met for dinner at the Inn at Stonehall which has just received its first Michelin star, this was well attended and the food was excellent – good choice Ray!

After exchanging of gifts, we received the ‘’Pear drink’’ ugh……… Usually the outgoing President toasts the new President at Handover and any of our members who dare also share in the toast. Our President Ian gave their 1st.Vice President a whole ‘Old Worcester White Cheddar’, this was received well.

On Sunday morning before saying our extended farewells we called in to St.Richard’s Hospice to show our visitors where we had planted the Ginkgo Biloba tree, which was presented to Worcester Lions by the Lions Club de Frankfurt-Ville de Goethe at a joint meeting in Orleans last September together with the Old Stone from Orleans presented to Worcester to commemorate our 40 years Charter.

It was then hugs and au revoirs as our friends left to drive back to Orleans.

I noticed on the Orleans Lions web page that they shared the cheese at their dinner meeting soon after their return.
