Ordinary People doing Amazing Things

A Quacking Event from Kidderminster & District Lions!

Ducks Away!!!!

What do you do on a New Year’s morning? Well Bewdley folks line their bridge and throw ducks in the river Severn. It may sound strange but Bewdley has been doing this for many years in an event organised by Kidderminster and District Lions Club. This year we estimate that over 2500 people lined the banks of the river to watch over 650 ducks being thrown off the bridge to the sound of cannon fire. It is a wonderful event to witness.

Kidderminster Lions also held a best dressed duck competition which was judged by Bewdley Mayor, Paul Gittens. There were many entries of all shapes and sizes, some were plastic ducks whilst other entries were made from a variety of materials, but as we all know it is the taking part that counts.

Each year the queue for buying the plastic ducks starts at 10.15 and continues solidly until 11.55 when people have to rush to the bridge to get an advantage point for launching their duck off it at 12 noon. The first past the winning post gets the trophy of a bronze duck and £15.00 prize money. This year’s winner, Jeff Toye, kindly donated the prize money back as all he really wanted was the bronze duck to show to all his friends.

Wyre Forest Canoe Club and SARA (Severn Area Rescue Association) catch all the ducks at the end of the race and it is thanks to them that these ducks can be cleaned and entered again next year.

So what will you do next New Year’s morning ………………….?
