Ordinary People doing Amazing Things

Lions 5 - Rotary 2

There has always been close co-operation between the Lions and Rotary Clubs of Warwick.

Every year they work together, sometimes with other groups, to organise the Town Bonfire and fireworks, the Victorian Evening and Carols at Warwick Castle.

So closely do they work that when the 2 clubs each had their first female President in 2008-09, that Rotary President Thelma Atkins was already married to Warwick Lion Tony Atkins.

Lion President Alan Lettis decided to organise an event for the two clubs.

He provided a trophy of finest chromium plate and challenged the Rotary Club to a Skittles Tournament on 16th February.

The venue was the renamed and mostly refurbished Wild Boar real ale pub in Lakin Road, Warwick. Sadly their on-site micro-brewery was between brews.

The skittle alley was at the side of a back room, where meals of chicken, chips and peas were served at half time.

In the words of President Alan “Everyone I spoke to said how much they enjoyed the evening, the food was good, the atmosphere was good, the venue was good although the room was work in progress, the two groups of club members mixed and there was lots of good banter and humour between each other, the beer was good, three prospective new members came along and really enjoyed the evening and lastly the sweetest part of the evening was the victory. Not only did we win the tournament five games to two, with one drawn, we scored the highest points tally during the tournament, we also won the knock out competition with prospective new member Colin scoring an 18 and we even managed to win the booby prize, so commiserations to Charles.

The Rotary are already planning a return match, so we will have to be prepared.”
